Libby Barnett, MSW, Reiki Master Teacher
Libby Barnett, MSW, Reiki Master Teacher, is Founder and Director of the Reiki Healing Connection, an Asheville, NC, based organization providing practitioner certification and teacher training in Reiki. Barnett has practiced Reiki since 1979, helping pioneer the integration of Reiki into conventional health care. Barnett is the longest practicing Reiki Master in the Eastern US.
Barnett received her BS from Ohio Wesleyan University, 1965, and her MSW from Simmons School of Social Work, 1969. She integrates her forty-six years of Reiki experience with her past experience as a social worker at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Barnett trained with Reiki Master John Harvey Gray, becoming certified in Reiki I in 1979, and Reiki II in 1981. She assisted Gray in numerous classes over the course of five years. Barnett then continued her Reiki studies with Judy-Carol Stewart, becoming certified as a Reiki Master in 1989. Ms. Stewart was trained by Barbara Lincoln McCullough who, like John Gray, was one of the twenty-two Reiki instructors trained by Hawayo Takata, the teacher who introduced Reiki to the United States in 1973.
Barnett is co-author of Reiki Energy Medicine: Bringing Healing Touch into Home, Hospital, and Hospice, which has sold over 80,000 copies in five languages. Her book addresses the use of Reiki in the hospital, hospice and psychotherapeutic setting, supporting the current trend toward integrating complementary therapies with conventional medicine.
Barnett has taught Reiki to over 14,000 people nationwide, including health care professionals at many hospital and hospice organizations including: Massachusetts General, Children’s (Boston), Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Spaulding Rehab, Brigham and Women’s, Beth Israel Lahey Health, Dartmouth Health, and New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Barnett has taught Reiki to staff and volunteers at many hospice organizations, including The Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care at Dartmouth and provided on-going support to the Merrimack, NH Hospice House for over 20 years.
Barnett taught Reiki at Harvard, Tufts, and Brown medical schools and to over 100 students at Yale University School of Nursing. For six years, Barnett conducted Reiki classes at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. She has taught Reiki classes at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health for over 20 years and continues to offer ongoing classes for Kripalu twice a year, both in-person and virtually.
Barnett also served as a preceptor for the AHNA Certificate Program in Holistic Nursing and created a Reiki segment for the PBS nationally televised series, Body and Soul. For 4 years, Barnett presented Reiki at the annual conference of the National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine in Hilton Head, SC.
Barnett taught oncology nurses at Dana Farber Cancer Institute for nine years and helped launch a Reiki volunteer program to provide Reiki to patients during chemo. She participated in a Reiki presentation to Harvard Medical School’s Osher Integrative Grand Rounds.
