For Volunteers

CCLD offers volunteers extensive educational programming. We ask volunteers interested in providing support for residents and families to go through a training.

To begin any of these trainings, you must already be a volunteer at CCLD. If you are not yet a volunteer, you must become one first. Begin that process by clicking here.

Once you have completed the entire volunteer onboarding process - including the Immersion Day - and want to sign up for either the Direct Care Training or the Holistic Care Training, please email education@ccld.community and let us know which training route you’d like to take.

Direct Care Training:

By becoming a Direct Care Volunteer, you are committing to serve at the bedside at CCLD an average of 3-4 turns per month. Turns are from 7a to 12 pm, 12 pm to 5 pm, 5 pm to 10 pm, and 10 pm to 7 am. This includes providing hands-on comfort care to residents in their dying season: pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic support, hygiene care, repositioning, as well as emotional and spiritual support. For questions about if this is the right volunteer path for you, please email sheri@ccld.community. We recognize that volunteering at CCLD is an investment of your time and energy, and it is our honor to include this heartfelt and transformative program as our offering to you in return.

Direct Care Training includes a:

  • Retreat Day (6 hours) to build connection, community, and to engage in conscious dying experiential practices

  • Grief Experience (4.5 hours) to learn to support yourself and others in grief - includes a module from the curriculum on grief prior to the Experience

  • Online training for Skills, Policies, and Procedures at the bedside followed by an in-person 2.5 hour Skills Fair to practice those skills in real-time

  • 3 week long online training curriculum: One week to complete a module followed by a 2 hour Zoom call to integrate the material as a group. Three weeks to complete three modules and three Zoom calls. Zoom calls are recorded for those unable to attend. The modules focus on relationship with Self, with community, and with death and dying.

This training allows you to reflect on your own death and dying process to live more fully, and to cultivate the skills needed to provide support at the bedside for CCLD’s residents in their last days.

Graduates of our Direct Care Training program can receive an end-of-life doula certificate as well. To do so, volunteers will show regular volunteerism at the bedside and complete one or more of our Deepening Education Courses. If you are a graduate of this program or choosing the Direct Care Training Volunteer route and want to pursue this certificate, please email  education@ccld.community with any questions.
