Funerary Rites Webinar with Prema Sheerin

In traditional cultures, death was understood as a sacred passage to the realm of the ancestors and the souls of the dead were not abandoned after the funeral. A skilled medicine person would accompany and support the soul after death, resolving any unfinished business from life, and guiding them on the journey to be welcomed by the ancestors.

Funerary rites involve a ritual, conducted by a trained community elder or healer, (‘psychopomp’, shaman, monk, priest etc), that escorts the soul through the unseen realms to its ancestral homeland. This is a profoundly beneficial process, both for the soul of the individual as well as for the health of the community. For the soul, it provides guidance and safe passage on the difficult journey of finding its way back to its rightful place. For the family members and community, it provides a sense of peace, knowing that their loved one is well cared for. It also supports a deeper connection to an unbroken line of ancestral benevolence that is invested in our wellbeing.

Because we have largely forsaken these rituals, much of the suffering and disconnection we experience comes from the unmetabolized burdens and trauma handed down from generation to generation.

In this 90-minute program we will explore the tradition of funerary rites, the benefits they provide and how they can be offered within the context of CCLD. We take such exquisitely tender care of the person’s body after they die. This is an invitation to expand our awareness of how their soul can also be tended with care if they or their family choose.
